AP Classes in Cyber School?

Cyber school often has a reputation as being less than public schools in academics and credentials. One main reason why that reputation doesn’t always add up is the fact that AP classes are offered online.

This year I took an AP Psychology class through APEX Learning. Basically it worked like any other online class, but it just took a little more time and effort than some of my other classes.

The AP course also lasted only one semester. This actually turned out to be a downfall because I took it the first semester, forgot everything the second semester and then had to take the official AP test in May. Hopefully I did well; I studied like a maniac!

Even though I took my AP course online I was still able to take the test like any other AP Psych student at my school, and have the chance to obtain a college credit with the course.

So don’t be worried about cyber school not allowing you to be able to take AP courses. You can still take them, but you may need to do some more work on your own, than with an AP course in public school.

Staying Connected With Your Public School While in Cyber School

Junior year is notoriously know to be a miserable and busy year. This is because of PSSAs, SATs, Applying to colleges, AP tests, etc.

These requirements don’t change in cyber school. Junior year is still a very crazy year. In fact I’ve probably been to my public school at least once a month for testing, sports, HACC applications, etc. It’s pretty hard to become disconnected.

In fact now that I finished up with a year of cyber school I can give a more complete explanation to the whole debate about cyber schoolers becoming disconnected from the world and other people. I still think it all depends, but you do have to work at being very anti-social and secluded to really disconnect yourself.

I personally mainly hang out with my friends from my youth group a lot, and I get out of the house whenever I can because it can become a bit boring and lazy staying at home so much. So with that said I believe there is at least some want to go outside and experience new things no matter how introverted.

There are also tons of people to meet and connect with in the world. There are the sales clerks, the mail-men, people at churches and clubs, sport’s teammates, etc. You have to really work to make sure you stay hidden from people.

Understand that when I am talking about staying social and having friends, I personally don’t believe they all have to be in your age group. So I would categorize going to the elderly home to visit some of your elderly friends there being social.

Some people would probably disagree with that, and talk about how important it is to have people your own age as friends. Sure it’s nice and great, but not completely necessary for everyone.

Anyway getting back to the point, it is hard to completely become disconnected from the world and your old school. There are always errands to run and people to meet. This is especially true if you are taking standardized tests, getting ready to go to a college, going to a club or on a sports team.

The only thing that really changes is that you gain a new perspective of the school/world and may feel a bit different than the other kids around you or from how you used to be.

There Will Always Be Things to Do

I figured that finishing school early would mean tons of relaxation time for Kelly, but I was pretty wrong about that.

Years before when I was 12 or even 14 I didn’t have a lot of things to do for the summer. I didn’t need a job or have to worry about scheduling college courses and the future. I would just go outside and play with my friends or go swimming.  Now that I’m almost 17 the summer is becoming a lot more work.

I have to find a job so I can keep up my lifestyle and prepare for the future; I have to keep up with little projects; I have to study for things like my AP test (even though that’s not really a summer thing); I also have to figure out what I’m going to do about my further education and future.

It all can get pretty stressful.

Still it is very nice to not have to do school work because it allows me to get a head start on a lot of these things and to be more productive.

So just make sure that if you are older and you want to do cyber school you take these things into account. Personally I think it’s nice because I can get a head start and I can spend more of my time on things that I find more important than knowing that how to do that one problem in Calculus.

Cyber School Pro – Growth and Change

Today I was reflecting back on how I grew and changed this year. I am now much more comfortable in my own skin and I have a much better understanding of who I am and what my future will look like.

I believe I grew this much because of cyber school. I’m sure that I still would have grown up this way in public school this year, but I feel that cyber school made the change much faster.

I used to have a lot of anxiety in school. I was always afraid that people would make fun of me or that my face wasn’t pretty enough after seven hours. It really took a toll on me. I would look to fashion magazines and obsess about my look and having to be perfect because people had to think that I led an absolutely spotless life. Now looking back, I’m sure that most of the students felt that same way.

Along with the issues surrounding what I looked like, I also didn’t have a very full grasp on who I was as an individual. Like I said, I would try to copy things and look to other people to make me feel okay about myself. I also allowed people’s opinions to shape my views on things, and dilute my oppositions. No matter how much progress I made by going to youth group and finding a great friend group, I still would get pulled down again daily.

During public school I also had no idea what I wanted to do when I got older. I had narrowed it down to some kind of ministry work, but it kept changing and I just had absolutely no clue.

These are a lot of negatives to bring up, so I’ll just put a slight disclaimer here: I don’t regret being in public school because it took understanding both sides of the coin to solve these big problems in my life, and to get me to where I am today.

When I switched to cyber school all of these problems started to slowly fade away.

I didn’t have all of the kids around me everyday that I feared would judge me for what I had decided to wear, and I saw close friends and family most of the time. The comfort I felt with the people around me in cyber school allowed me to find a look that I truly liked, and that fit the real me. I discovered also how to not care about my looks too much, but also how to not be a total slob everyday.

As I was working on the whole look thing, I also slowly began to understand who I actually am. I was able to talk about things I actually wanted to, give my own opinions and to not worry that people weren’t going to like me. This was a very slow process that took a lot of deep talks with my mom, thought and prayer, but I think it was able to happen because of the lack of peer pressure around me all the time.

As for the last problem, I still don’t know exactly what I want to do when I get older, but I’ve started to have a better understanding and rules for a future job. For example I wouldn’t want to work in a church because I don’t think my personality could take the politics or the jobs that are offered there.

Overall cyber school worked out great for me, and I’m sure other students will agree and relate to what I said here. Do keep in mind though that only I  changed, not the outside world. I still get judged sometimes or have bad experiences, but I know how to handle those situations internally and keep my head up.

Returning Borrowed Cyber School Equipment

Since I have just recently finished up cyber school for my Junior year, I’ve had to clean up the things I’ve borrowed from my school district. These include:

- A laptop

- Computer Accessories

- Printer

- Books

So first to go were the books. I had to drive about 20 minutes away to a local elementary school where my cyber school administrator worked. There were only three books, and it was really simple and easy. Basically we just walked into the door told him we were here to return some books for cyber school, and he took them. then we left. Easy as pie!

Today we went back to return the laptop, computer accessories an printer. For this we had to go to an administrative building and drop them off with a different administrator.

Whenever I borrow something like this I always make sure that I try to keep everything in its place unless I absolutely need it. Why? Because I will never find it again if I take it out of the case.

With that said I started out using the school computer, and then eventually I used my regular computer because I couldn’t go on Facebook, YouTube or ITunes with that computer. I need to listen to music or something while working I don’t know why. For example right now I’m listening to “Ob-la-di, Ob-la-da” by the Beetles.

Anyway I brought everything back to the admin building and had to wait a little bit for the administrator to come out and check off everything. It ended up that I had returned everything they had given me, but the list said there was one other thing I forgot. I never had that piece of equipment though, which I’m kind of miffed about because it would have been helpful, and he believed me. So he decided he would look into it, just to make sure.

Overall it was pretty pain free, and easy. I know my friends the O’Wells have to mail back their things because they don’t have anywhere close by to drop it off at. They also receive their things in the mail, so it’s not a very hard process for them either besides storing boxes and supplies.

So that now means that besides the AP test in May, I am completely done with school and PSSAs! Yea!

Officially Ending Cyber School Six Weeks Early!

So today marks the day that I officially finished up school my junior year! WOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOO!

I am very excited to have this off of my plate. I still have PSSAs for two more days this next week and an AP test coming up, but those won’t be too bad.

I can always study for my AP test at night or when I get bored and skip a couple days without worrying about attendance and other work. Basically there is a lot of freedom.

To celebrate this freedom, I plan on taking next week to sleep in, get some work done, but mostly live it up and do things I enjoy like blog posts and learning guitar. The next week I’ll start actually doing more work type things like starting my Ebay business, advertising face painting, etc.

I’m not going to get lazy,  but school is a big stress on life; regardless if it’s cyber school or public school. There is a lot of planning and time that goes into school each day. Without that stress I’ll be able to really work on figuring out what to do as far as jobs and my future go.

With all of that said, I’m happy that I did in fact finish this week. I was afraid I wouldn’t, and it would be drawn out longer. As it was, I was completely finished with everything, but ended up with an 88% in Math. So I contacted my teacher to see if I could redo some lessons to get better grades on them, and also meet with her so she could better explain to me how to do the problems.

That ended up really well, but when I went to take the one test I did badly on it again. So I e-mailed her back, and asked her if I could retake the same test again. She finally got back to me on Thursday and told me she had reset it for me.

Well she did reset one of the assessments, but not the right one!

Luckily I finally got a hold of her, and she reset the right one this time, and I passed it! Even though it took a long time, I’m glad that I did it, and didn’t just accept a B.

So that means for my whole entire school year I only got one B in the third marking period and the rest were As.

I had a wonderful year in cyber school, and I’d recommend it to most students who want to explore a different way.

The Ending Cyber School Six Weeks Early Blues

Today was supposed to be my last day, and it still could be, but it will be very late by the time I will be able to finish.

So in my last post I talked about how today I would be done because I would finish up the rest of my History class and redo those Math lessons.

Well, I did the first for the first couple hours of my day, and that went off perfectly. Then when I went to do my Math with my teacher.

I had already finished these three lessons, but I had gotten pretty bad grades on them. This usually wouldn’t matter to me if my grade in Math didn’t turn out to be an 88%. So I asked if I could have three of my Math lessons reset and then be able to go over them with my teacher today. She was very happy that I asked, and she helped me out after we rescheduled because the other time ran into complications.

So we finally talked; I thought that I got the lessons figured out and even got exempt from doing the one because it was a lot higher Math that wasn’t supposed to be included.  When I went to do the one lesson on my own, I was very confused. So I answered the questions, and got a bad grade on it…again!

So now I ‘m here waiting for my teacher to respond to my e-mail requesting that it is reset again. So I have to delay my excitement and happiness at finishing school early for one more day. It’s really killing me inside!

I also now have an 89% as my grade in Math. So. Close.

No matter how upset or stressed I am about this one little thing, I still have to acknowledge that adding one day to my school year isn’t quite as bad as adding 50 more days. So really I should still be really happy and excited!

In other news I also got through my HACC placement testing, which I will talk about sometime later this week. I’ll be back here tomorrow when (hopefully) I will be completely finished with cyber school.

About to Finish Cyber School Six Weeks Early

Success is sweet!

My goal for the last marking period was to finish it by May 1st. I didn’t know if I’d be able to get it all completed that early, but here I am.

I only have maybe a day or two left in my Junior year. That’s right! I am finishing my Junior year over six weeks early. How insane is that!?

Now this wasn’t an easy venture. I had to work really hard the last two weeks to completely finish Math and English.

I already did a post on my Math week, but I haven’t reported how my English week went.

My goal for my English week was to finish all 15 of my reports in the span of four days. That meant about 3-5 reports a day. These weren’t as mentally tiring as Math was because it was more of a busywork/ normal thinking instead of wrapping my head around in depth concepts found in Math.

With that said, it was much harder to focus on writing for my English week. I would want to finish up a report, but I would end up getting distracted or procrastinating in some kind of way. And that is why I finished my English week with two reports to do this week.

That’s not bad though; it means I completed 13 reports last week.  I would call that impressive. Not to mention the fact that I got perfects on almost all of them.

Then I moved on to this week.

Yesterday I finished my entire Health class for marking period 4 in one day. Today I completed my entire English class. So then what does that mean I have left?

History and Math.

I am technically done with Math, but my grade is an 88% in that class,  and I’d like to get an A at least. So I contacted my Math teacher and we will be meeting tomorrow to go over some lessons she is being kind enough to reset for me so that I can boost my grade up. It won’t take too long.

The last thing left will then be the rest of my History class. This is a no-brainier class that will most likely only take me a day or two to finish, and then I’m done.

Not just done with the class or marking period; I’m talking done, done. Can you tell that I’m excited?

Sadly I will have PSSAs on Monday and Wednesday, but other than that there is no more school work or homework to do until next year when I will be dual-enrolled in Harrisburg Community College.

The future is looking bright because the sun is shining down on me today!

Preparing Yourself for Work in Cyber School

After the nice four day week in cyber school I will be going back to working hard tomorrow. This week I will be focusing on English.

When I say ‘focusing’ I actually mean doing about four to five reports each day for the remainder of the week. This insane amount of work is for the purpose of finishing up all of my school work by May 1st. So far I’ve finished up my Math class so I know that my goal is within reach.

This will be a lot of work. So how do you get prepared for this?

The first subcategory or getting prepared for the week is physical. This basically means sleep-schedule, eating brain foods, and putting yourself in a good environment.

Your sleep schedule is important whether or not you are in cyber school or public school. Make sure you are well rested for the week, but also don’t overdue it or your body is going to want more sleep than needed. That takes away work time. My first day of Math I was a bit unbalanced on this,  and had to go take a nap half way through.

The next is brain foods. After the Easter break I have probably ruined this step for myself and also sabotaged myself for the week to come with the obscene amount of candy and carbs in my house right now. Whoops! As long as I have some more structured meals that include veggies, protein, etc. I should be fine. For example I ate terribly yesterday, but today I had eggs and toast for breakfast to get a good start for my day, and I feel pretty good.

The last for the physical side of preparation is a good environment. Make sure wherever you are working is clean the day before, so you won’t get distracted cleaning up your desk when you should be explaining Shakespeare. Also if you are trying to do a lot of work in a little time, it is a good idea to have some sort of support or encouragement. For example, I keep tally marks of what I’ve done and my mom and I occasionally check in on each other since we work in the same vicinity.

The next sub-category is the mental side.

When doing a lot of work, the mental side can easily be your downfall if you are not prepared enough for what you have to do. For example you may be feeling so good physically from the above steps, and reason with yourself that going outside and riding your bike is much more important than finishing up you school work, right?

When I’m getting ready for a work day I think the most important thing is planning. I usually keep a to-do list, so when I start working I can just keep going, and I don’t have to slow down, and spend unnecessary time figuring out what to do next.

CAUTION: Once you make a to-do list don’t keep reading it and thinking about it. You can easily become intimidated with the amount of work in front of you and compromise your goals. Believe me, I know.

With that said, specifics are bad to focus on, but it’s important to focus on the more broad topics. Broad topics are things like how many a day or the ending result. Don’t focus on the specifics of each project like researching or making a thesis or learning the Math problems and scanning things. That get’s overwhelming very quickly.

I also mentioned looking towards the end result. Basically this goes along with that overused phrase of ‘Keep your eyes on the prize’. It is true though. Let your goal become your motivation, and use it as much as possible. It works!

Other than those two exercises it’s important to not really think about the work week too awful much. If you keep on thinking about it you will spend up all of the mental energy you need for the actual work, and your day will be very unpleasant.

So In conclusion for my long work week ahead of me I am keeping my eye on the prize, reminding myself that it will be a lot of work (no specifics) and spending very little mental energy other than the first two on it. Also I will be staying healthy by eating brain foods, getting enough sleep and cleaning up my work station today.

Cyber School Math Class Complete!

Facebook status (April 5th 11:12) : After countless hours of working on my Math class these past four days, I have finally finished it. No more Math for this Junior! :D

Please excuse the spelling errors. My brain was so fried after finishing this that I even had trouble opening up doors.

Yes! I’m done with Math for the year! WOOOOOOOHOOOOOO!

This was pretty difficult to do, but still not completely terrible. Each day I would sit down at my computer for about four or five hours, and work only on Math. Through doing this I completed a unit a day.

There are 15 lessons in each unit. After each lesson there is a five question test on the unit that adds up to 10 points. Every fifth and tenth lesson is comprised of about 19 questions instead of five, and you have to write out the last four questions and scan them on to your computer to complete them. These larger tests are worth 5o points.

There is also a large unit test after each unit. It is made up of about 40 questions and counts for 100 points. They have about six open-ended questions that you have to finish and scan onto your computer.

The first day I completed about 10 lessons, then took a nap. After feeling refreshed I came back and completed the last five questions of the first unit. That day wasn’t too bad, and I felt really accomplished (and out of it) when I completed it! I kept bragging to my friends.

The second day I didn’t take any naps, and I worked for four hours strait on Math. This unit was really easy for me, and I got some really good grades from it.  I also started listening to the Hunger Games Soundtrack while working, and that was fun. I also bragged profusely after this day, and my brain was pretty fried.

The third day was much tougher. The last two days were starting to catch up on me, and I was completely ready to just be done with it. Luckily I kept working hard until the last couple lessons where I will admit, I may have guessed a little bit…

Finally the last day was the worst. I only had to finish up the unit quizzes, and then I’d be done with the entire Math course. Also most of the questions are repeats so you can look back through your older quizzes, and get the answers. Anyway I guessed a bunch on those. Finally when I finished I went up stairs, couldn’t open my door on the first try, and went to bed.

Later that day I was so brain fried that I couldn’t feel relaxed yet or function properly. Needless to say, my friends enjoyed my state a lot.

But I did it! Now all that is left in Math class is to sit, and wait for my big tests to be graded. My final score also might not be as great as I ‘d like, so I may ask my teacher if I can redo some of the lessons, and get her help for them. Not a big deal really, but other than that stuff, I’m done!

Now all I have left are my two easy classes, History and Fitness, which I can finish in a day or two, easy, and my English class.

This next week, starting on Tuesday because it’s Easter break, I will be working on English in the same way I worked on Math. English is comprised of lessons like math with multiple choice, and reports. There are around four or five reports in a unit, so naturally I am going to try to complete four or five reports each day.

Luck for me, I really enjoy English and writing. So this shouldn’t be nearly as painful as Math was. I hope.

Remember my goal is to finish up school by May 1st! Wish me luck!
